New Kid on the Block – Costa Coffee

At the rate that coffee chains and independent outlets are opening one after another, either Singapore cannot get enough java or the coffee culture here is gaining ground. The more the merrier, I say so that with choices and hence competition, it will no longer be a mean feat to find good coffee. Within walking distance from Japanese's Doutor Coffee at Marina Bay Financial Centre are English's Costa Coffee at Chevron House and Australian's Jamaica Blue at One Raffles Place. And it seemed all three opened within the same week.

Since Costa Coffee's general manager Steen Puggard said "the quality of coffee will be closer to what you might get at artisanal coffee cafés", I just had to give it a try. After lunch on a Thursday, the place was bustling with most seats occupied and a few people waiting for their orders at the collection counter. Ordered a macchiato and instead of waiting with the rest for my drink, took a seat on a high bar stool. Figured there was no way I could hang around the collection counter without obstructing the way and the staff was probably stressed up enough by the pairs of eyes staring at them.

Could smell and taste the aroma of its slow-roasted Mocha Italia blend as I took a sip of the macchiato. Smooth, full-bodied with a tinge of bitterness and definitely good enough to drink sans sugar. Indeed "for coffee lovers by coffee lovers". The largest and fastest growing coffee shop chain in UK, the brand was brought in by Robinsons Group with plans to open up to 6 outlets in its 1st year. According to its website, the 2nd will open at Raffles City Shopping Centre next month.
